According to the Mountain View Recycling Resource, most consumers are aware computer monitors and televisions have been banned from the trash. Starting February 9,2006, new State hazardous waste rules have banned more consumer electronics and mercury-containing products from the trash such as microwaves, VCRs, cell phones, fluorescent lights, batteries, and thermometers. These items cannot be placed in trash or recycling containers because they contain lead, copper, mercury, or chromium that can pollute the environment. The rules apply to all households and businesses, and typically involve any product with a circuit board.
